====== Keys, Computers, Printers, Telephone, Mail ====== see also travel & conferences ===== Keys ===== To get a key to 306 & 317 (same key) and outside door of Weniger Hall visit the "forms" page on the department website and fill in a key request. Renee will give you a piece of paper with the key numbers. Then you will visit the campus "key shack" at the intersection of 15th and Washington Ave and pay a $5 deposit for each key. The group shares keys to some other research labs: The Keszler group in Chemistry (ask Josh), and Alex Yokochi's SEM in Chemical Engineering (ask Matt). ===== Computer account and file sharing===== To get an account with COSINE (College of Science Information Network) fill out this Account Application and return it to 1022 Cordley. Remeber to specify that you need access to the T: drive (Physics/Minot Group). For sharing files with group members, log into your COSINE account, open 'my computer/T:/Physics/Minot Group'. We can store ~ 10 Gb here. For files which you don't need to share with other people, you have 2 or 3 Gb on the Z: drive. ===== Printers ===== To use the printer for the first time, log into your cosine account (SCIENCE domain), click start, run, and then type \\cos-print and hit ok or enter. This should open a folder with multiple printers labeled by their building and room number. Find WNGR317prn2 and add it by double clicking or right-click, open. Instructions on adding from cosine can be found here. It takes about 30 seconds and then the printer is visible in your control panels. In the control panel, right click on the printer and select properties. Here you can adjust the default printer settings. Most people prefer **double-sided printing** as the default setting. For using the laserjet printer in the physics office, click start, run, and type \\cosprint\wngr301prn1. Use the main office printer to print teaching materials and departmental stuff. ===== Printing posters ===== 36" wide x 48" tall is a common size (3 feet by 4 feet). Many poster printers use a roll of paper that is 3 feet wide. The student media services, located on the 2nd floor of the valley library (just as you walk in main door). "Students may order one print per assignment free of charge" i.e. the poster is free if it is for a class. Printing glossy is no extra charge. Printing on Matte paper costs about $30. Landon and Matt have used this service. FedEx/Kinkos Shop on 9th Street near Goodwill has good prices for posters. Remember to ask for the OSU discount (25%?). The online system for uploading files from your computer works very smoothly (less running around town). It costs around $6 per sq ft for heavy weight paper and glossy finish. The turn-around time at Kinko is typically 24 hours (better than OSU print shop). They prefer pdf file format. If you don't know how to turn your powerpoint file into a pdf, ask for help. Image resolution should be high (600 - 1200 dpi). The only disadvantage of Kinkos is that they don't accept OSU index numbers for direct charging. FedEx/Kinkos will print the 3 feet by 4 feet poster on standard matte paper for ~ $54 (regular price $87, but OSU discount makes it $54). There is an additional student discount of 10%. Pay at the store when you pick up the poster - they don't take OSU index. The OSU print shop has also has reasonable prices. They will take pdf or powerpoint files. (It is convenient to use powerpoint to prepare posters for conferences.) The print job can be submitted online (file sizes up to 80 Mb). Don't forget to read the document preparation tips. The nanotube AFM image in our lab was printed on polypropylene (good for high color saturation) and laminated with single-sided satin. The file was prepared in photoshop at 300 dpi resolusion. ===== Long distance phone calls ===== If you need to make long distance calls you have to get a 7-digit code from Paula. ===== Mail boxes & packages ====== Grad students have individual mail boxes in the kitchen area next to 301 Weniger. Packages with equipment orders are generally left in the corridor outside Henri Jansen's office. The Physics main office can help with sending a package by USPS, UPS, FedEx etc. **Example: Sending equipment back to the manufacture.** You decide to send the box by UPS Ground. Paula gives you a yellow form that says "Parcel Mailing Order Form, OSU Printing & Mailing Services". Fill in this form, including the purchase code number (either the general account for physics, or one of our group accounts). Take the box, and the Mailing Order Form, to the Mailing Services desk in Cascade Hall. ===== OSU Listserves ==== *Tate labs - Keep up-to-date about equipment we share with Janet Tate's lab. ===== Recycling/Reuse ===== *Web request for a recycling pickup. Polystyrene peanuts can be dropped off in Weniger to be redistributed: * Box or bag your peanuts * Place in the shipping area (first floor of Weniger, small room next to the freight elevator) with a note: "Please Recycle"
